I would consider myself a snowshoe beginner. Prior to attempting this race, I had logged a total of 5 miles in snowshoes, on a fairly flat trail. Signing up for a 1/2 marathon, was definitely outside my comfort zone, but I knew I would at the very least complete a 10k. Having never done a Peak Race before, I didn’t really know what to expect. I mean I knew what to expect, but not first hand.
This course was not a Saturday stroll in the woods. There were some challenging ups, but in comparison to the ups at Killington, they weren’t so bad. The view at the top by Shrek’s cabin made it all worth it! The downs were interesting. Sometimes it was like having stubby skis on your feet, and I ended on my bum a few times, once landing on a rock hidden under fluffy looking snow. There were times I couldn’t see anyone in front of me or behind me and it was awesome, and beautiful, and calm.
I DNF’d the 1/2. Many people followed suit, the trails were tougher than many anticipated. I plan to register again for 2015, with the hope of getting out on my shoes a little more next winter, climbing mountains for training!
