Review of the 2013 Boston Tough Mudder.
It was my first time running this distance for an ocr race, have only run 5k races to this point. Ran with a group of about 10 people of different abilities. Overall it was a very fun and rewarding day. The group split into 3 separate groups just before midpoint. The parking, transportation were very well organized. Registration was excellent and quick as well the bag check. The heat times started a bit late, we were scheduled for 12:45, but didn’t start till 1:00, not too bad considering the amount of people. All of the obstacles were in great condition and challenging, was a bit bummed that the “walk the plank” was not running due to construction issues. We finished just under 4 hrs 30 mins. The other 2 groups finished right around 4 hrs. The most difficult part was the going up the mountain 3-4 times and the heat, they said they added water strains due to the heat but we went up the mountain and bag down before we hit water almost 2 miles after the last. There were lots of
people dropping of dehydration and calf/leg issues.
It was a great experience and can’t wait now too get my Spartan trifecta this year along with the Spartan Fenway.

The event was held at gunstock resort, an outdoors mans dream with plenty of land, zip lines, pool area, and ski slopes for the winter. Parking was at louden motor speedway, roughly a 20 minute shuttle ride to and from the motor speedway to gunstock. As soon as you touch down at your designated drop area, all you see before you are registration lines for participants, spectators, info desk, and a tent with extra waivers (great idea since I forgot mine in my morning rush!). Collecting your registration info was easy an in alphabetical order. Primary vendors were Dos Equis who supplied your finishers beer and clif builders protein bars. Tons of rowdiness and music from the DJ booth to keep you entertained before and after your race. Overall it was very organized.

The course itself was 12 miles but felt more like 13. There were a few obstacles missing namely, “walk the plank”(closed down when i got there), “twinkle toes”, “spiders web”, ” hanging tough”, and “greased lightning”. What they lacked in obstacles they made up with uphill racing. I breezed through the obstacles but those hills in 90 degree weather really does a number to up the toughness factor. On that note, I want to mention that TM did a great job with the hydration stations and keeping the runners cool. They had about 6 hydration stations with bananas offered further into the course and water mist blown on the runners at intermittent points in the race, mostly at the top of the hills. About 4 huge hills in total. 15 or so obstacles. 12 miles. I absolutely felt challenged and most runners would agree. Awesome job TMHQ!
